A sun-drenched skater drifts through a liquefied, tripped-out Amsterdam on an oldskool-enhanced quest for the perfect shoe. The Vans x Ben G x Pop Trading Company collaboration celebrates Amsterdam through the love of skateboarding, inspired by the city's iconic Amsterdammertjes and the characters that drift through its streets.
To bring it to life, Picnic Studio hand-drew a looping psychedelic journey through the city - featuring a bespoke collaboration shoe with original artwork by Vans
100% old skool. Gloriously analogue.
“Vans created a single image for their collaboration with Ben G and X-Pop - a tripped-out painting of a skater on a substance-enhanced adventure through a colourful, dreamlike Amsterdam. Our task was to translate it into a mini film taking inspiration from vintage skate films, Levis ad’s and a dose of Ralph Bakshi to showcase the shoes, the city, and get our skater safely to Ben G's flagship store in one liquefied, psychedelic piece.”
Everything about this project is old skool - from the genesis illustration to the pop-up event bleeding into the fabric of the streets around the Ben G store. It was important to us to hand-draw every frame and background in a totally loose state of flow. That gave it the glassy-eyed, slightly drunken quality Vans were after, and freed us up to animate almost without thinking - which felt right. When you skate, you have to let go. We tried to bring that same headspace to how we drew.
